Since the late 1990s, the Gran Turismo racing games for PlayStation have brought in billions of dollars, rivaling the box-office bounties of some movie franchises. It was only a matter of time before a movie offshoot arrived, following in the tracks of other live-action adaptations of PlayStation games, including last year’s “Uncharted.” “Gran Turismo” the movie tells the true (but unlikely) story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo maven who became a professional racer of actual cars on actual tracks. Mardenborough’s leap from pixels to asphalt was an effective advertisement for Gran Turismo as more than a game, but his transition wasn’t all smooth. After Jann’s father (Djimon Hounsou) says there’s no future in gaming and brings Jann to his job at a rail yard, Jann goes off and wins a contest held by Nissan to recruit promising Gran Turismo players. Once again Jann exceeds expectations and beats out a more TV-ready competitor for the chance to race professionally.

Archie Madekwe Photo: Sony PicturesThe auto-racing drama “Gran Turismo,” based on the Sony PlayStation game and released by Sony’s Columbia Pictures, makes much of a concept I’d never heard before: “to podium.” It means to finish in the top three, and according to a crusty coach, only those “who podium” get to celebrate with champagne. Does the team that finishes second in the World Series dive into the Veuve Clicquot? Previous to this picture, finishing second or lower was commonly known as “losing,” but I suspect “Gran Turismo” is signaling modest ambitions both for its protagonist and itself: It would be content to be dubbed the third-best sports-underdog movie of the year.

A startup that helps gamers become better at sports games like FIFA and F1 by analyzing their own player data just raised $1.8 million in seed funding. London-based Titan Academy was founded by Max Teichert, a racing instructor for Porsche who was also a Gran Turismo Academy finalist in 2014. "By taking players' game data and analyzing it in the cloud, we help them get better," Teichert told Insider. "Currently, we have a platform for racing games in the market and the first-ever FIFA analytics platform in development."
